Mammoth sought to create CRISPR-powered diagnostic devices with the versatility to detect multiple pathogens at once, while remaining low-cost, simple and portable for use in homes and at the Point-of-Care (POC).  This meant translating foundational scientific discoveries into a wide range of beautifully crafted, trusted and accessible products with unique solutions for integrating technical elements.

frog helped Mammoth conduct multiple rounds of user research to discover patient and practitioner needs. Prototype devices were built around how real people use diagnostics and POC workflows. This data informed everything from devices’ workflows, physical and digital features, engineering architecture, to formal expression of brand identity.

Purina acquired IP related to cat health monitoring that they wanted to incorporate into their first connected ecosystem offering. To be successful, the offering needed to be worthy of the Purina brand, meeting security, performance and pricing expectations of their customers, while also being a viable business. Purina needed a partner to guide them through the complex business and technical challenges associated with the journey to commercialization.

Orchestrating a business and technology transformation 

We applied our convergent design approach bringing a multidisciplinary team together to iteratively refine a solution that is viable as a business, desirable to consumers, technically feasible and sustainable. This resulted in delivering a cohesive connected system that allows hardware, software and AI to work together with a minimum carbon footprint; a new business, pricing and operating model that delivers value to Purina; and a delightful user experience that pet parents love.

Iterative convergent design

As a trusted business and technology transformation partner, we empowered Purina to focus on what they know best—pets and the people who care for them—while enabling Purina to successfully launch their first connected offering in less than two years. This has given Purina a powerful new direct connection to their consumers, opening up new sales channels and revenue models. More importantly, it has given pet parents peace of mind. Pet parents are celebrating the system with <a href="https://www.petivity.com/products/smart-litterbox-monitor" target="_blank">positive reviews</a> and crediting Petivity for saving their cats' lives.

The Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor is elegant in its apparent simplicity. But a lot of complex challenges were overcome to arrive at the ability to distinguish between multiple cats while protecting user privacy, keeping the user experience streamlined and hitting an aggressive price point. For example, it was crucial that the device didn’t require the use of intrusive cameras, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chips or special collars.

The WHO has identified antimicrobial resistance resulting from the overuse of antibiotics as one of the greatest challenges facing modern medicine. To tackle that challenge, med-tech company MeMed developed the pioneering ImmunoXpert lab test, which analyzes patients’ immune responses to distinguish between bacterial and viral infections, helping physicians to prescribe antibiotics more accurately and less frequently.
In order to maximize the value and accessibility of the ImmunoXpert test (now called the MeMedBV®), MeMed turned to frog to help them define and design a revolutionary immunoassay platform that could automatically perform ImmunoXpert diagnostics at the point of care in just 15 minutes, providing results where and when they are needed the most. frog&#8217;s<a href="https://www.frog.co/designmind/real-transformation-and-disruption-takes-convergent-design"> convergent design</a> approach and multidisciplinary team was key to the success of this project and the holistic integration of the platform&#8217;s product, service and digital experiences.

"The MeMed Key® is far greater than the sum of its parts. It is a perfect storm of engineering, design and product converging in a never-ending desire to perfect every fine detail. This was an enlightening experience of how far true collaboration between a group of talented individuals can reach."

The challenges involved in the project were immense and multifaceted. The platform would have to meet the practical needs of care providers in GP offices, nursing homes, hospitals and urgent care facilities, while also meeting the testing standards of central lab technicians. Through a process of immersive research in various point of care contexts, the frog team helped to identify the core user needs and product requirements that would drive design and technology ideation.
After initial research, frog planned and orchestrated iterative design workshops that brought MeMed, frog, the engineering and manufacturing partner, the consumables manufacturer and chemicals experts together into a collaborative process throughout the development cycle. Working together, the team was able to develop product architecture and experience concepts informed by both functional and aesthetic criteria, and which continuously evolved according to ongoing explorations of the system’s UI and data visualizations. Eventually, a semi-functional model of the MeMed Key® system was built and tested in Italy and Israel, validating the complete product and experience from process start and patient data insertion to scanning and result output.
