XCMR
XCMR, a UV technology startup, collaborates with academic, industry and government partners to pioneer advanced medical countermeasures for biodefense. XCMR’s mission is to combat airborne pathogen transmission.
Respiratory PPE technology has not evolved in decades and still relies on filtration as a means of protection. Breathing through a particulate filter is uncomfortable and allows pathogens to remain inside the mask. Disposal of face masks is expensive, represents a biohazard, a safety risk and is environmentally unfriendly. In contrast, XCMR's wearable UV-C biodefense device reduces risk of infection by inactivating airborne pathogens while providing continuous protection for the user.
XCMR’s strategic vision includes a full UV-C disinfection product range across diverse form factors and applications. XCMR approached frog because developing its first product meant XCMR was sowing the seeds of its design DNA. Everything from the architectural decisions to the design language to user experience considerations will continue to inform follow-on products.
frog’s industrial design team brought a thoughtful perspective around designing for the face, a deep contextual understanding of product usage in various environments, and a commitment to solving real-life user challenges.
This approach guided frog in crafting a cohesive and seamlessly integrated design that would continue to permeate all product decisions.
With our UV-C technology and frog design's user-centric approach, we're not just creating products, we're shaping the future of personal protection. This collaboration has allowed us to deliver on our promise of superior biosafety, comfort and adaptability for frontline workers and beyond.
Project highlights
Challenge
XCMR presented frog with powerful UV-C technology for pathogen inactivation. The challenge was to make it easily usable and fit modern expectations of technology in stressful, highly contaminated environments.
Solution
The modular system features a transparent facial mask that enables clearer communication, interchangeable UV-C reactor pods that target specific pathogens and a hot-swappable battery that enables uninterrupted wear.
Outcomes
frog and XCMR developed an innovative new class of UV-C enabled respiratory protection devices that readily inactivates pathogens, enabling individuals to work safely in high-risk bioaerosol environments.
Our collaboration relied on a human-centered industrial design to create a meaningful solution that bridges cutting-edge technology with users’ needs.
Crafting a cohesive industrial design was vital for XCMR. It ensures usability and functionality for the product while defining an approachable and recognizable form. Crucially, it is a touchstone for each new product release, shaping the brand's identity and impacting the user experience.
The XCMR / frog collaboration is focused on cultivating a long-term, sustainable design ethos that will inform XCMR's future innovation.
