Chase Payment Solutions wanted to create a solution that was easy-to-use, versatile, scalable and secure, enabling merchants to take payments on an integrated system that works seamlessly across their business management solutions.
Experience comes first
The team developed a mobile card reader for SMBs, designed to elevate the checkout experience for both in-store and on-the-go. Generative and evaluative research was used throughout the process to ensure merchant and user needs were met.

Chase is one of the most trusted banks in banking. A key part of the success of this project was using the Chase branding as an asset that brings a sense of security and helps merchants get business or make sales.
Anecdotal evidence from merchants has already come back stating that having Chase branding visible to customers is helping merchants close sales. This is because the design of the Chase Card Reader conveys that payments are securely managed by a trusted financial brand. There’s value with the Chase name reassuring customers and helping them feel more comfortable when making purchases.
The Chase Card Reader offers an end-to-end user experience that integrates a modern, modern, cloud-based POS system into Chase’s business banking platform to unlock unparalleled value for the merchant–reliable transactions at competitive prices, same-day access to funds and unique business insights at no extra cost, all conveniently managed in one account. Hardware and software were designed together, resulting in a product that is cohesive, user-friendly and easy to scale–merchants can add the Chase Card Reader, the Chase POS TerminalTM, Invoicing from Chase and online solutions as their businesses evolve.
The device supports all contactless and chip card payments and communicates the full transaction process to both customer and merchant on the Chase Card Reader’s bright LCD screen. Additionally, the reader pairs with the Chase Point of Sale app to unlock Chase POS software features, such as product catalog, inventory management, card and cash sales reporting and preset tax, tip and discount prompts.
Key features of the design included a unique round form factor that was inspired by Chase’s brand language and logo mark, and the inclusion of a screen for transparent and reassuring transactions. The product also addresses the evolving needs of businesses, by catering to the shift towards wireless and contactless payment methods.
The visual design features clear directions, accessible graphics, intuitive feedback as well as consideration for the product environment.
When used in stationary mode, the Chase Card Reader was designed to dock at an ideal viewing angle. Additionally, there is the option to anchor the device to the countertop for theft prevention.
The card reader is battery-powered for on-the-go payments. Thanks to the long-lasting battery, merchants can make up to 120 transactions on a single charge. The dock functions as a charging station when plugged in and the reader is placed on top.
Premium materials were used to differentiate the solution in the market, including the choice to build the base in aluminum and the scratch-resistant materials used for the bright LCD display.
